The Pirates of Penzance or The Slave of Duty (Repertory category: Opera) is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W.S. Gilbert; Directed by Richard Clifford. When young Frederic was but a boy, his father instructed Frederic’s nurse to have him apprenticed as a pilot. She thought he said “pirate” and thus the zany troubles began…Gilbert and Sullivan are the undisputed masters of comic operetta and the proud progenitors of the modern musical. The Department of Music and the Department of Theatre and Dance collaborate in a storytelling adventure on the high seas. We invite you to an evening filled with imagination and piratical hijinks with gentlemanly pirates, a bumbling constabulary, a bevy of beautiful daughters and the very model of a modern major general. Potential concerns: those sensitive to comic onstage fighting, arranged marriages. This show offers a talk-back session for audience discussion. Recommendations: This musical extravaganza contains a lot of words! The performance will be enhanced by projected supertitles. Recommended for all ages.
